About Jamie and J-Bird Clayworks
J-Bird Clayworks is a small ceramics business that I operate out of my home studio in Carthage, New York. I specialize in ceramic sculpture and functional pottery. I also draw and paint. The projects I work on are not limited to any specific size. I can create large-scale works such as custom hand-painted signs for businesses, and smaller graphics projects such as designing customized booklets for businesses and organizations.
My interest in the arts started at an early age. As a child I kept multiple sketchbooks of drawings. I learned the fundamentals of drawing and painting in high school, where I feel that I flourished the most with my artistic 2-D skills.
I received my Bachelors of Fine Arts degree from Alfred University in 2003 where I primarily studied ceramics. I learned the art of throwing along with hand-building and mold-making which I still continue with today. Along with art, education has always been a huge part of my life in and outside of school. For the last ten years, I have worked in professions that involve teaching youth and adults. To pursue my passion for a career in education, I received my Masters in Art Teaching degree in Art Education at the New York State University at Oswego in 2009. Since then I have taught in a variety of public institutions.
I have designed and run Fine Arts Programs on Fort Drum and the Carthage Free Library where I incorporate NYS Visual Arts Curriculum Standards in all of my lessons. I also do throwing demonstrations for schools and organizations upon request. In addition to my full time job, I currently work as a freelance artist.
